Introduction to Ceramics
Course Description: Introduction to ceramic art, including techniques and ceramic works of art.
Combining theory and practice, an in-depth investigation of ceramic art, including hand-building techniques, with an introduction to the potter's wheel. Clay and glazes, and various kiln-firing procedures are also explored, along with a historical overview.
3 Credit Course – No prerequistes
Objectives: Students will demonsrtate an understanding of the following
The nature of ceramic materials and their many uses.
Functional and sculptural works of a variety of cultures and time periods
A variety of clay working techniques
Utilization of techniques for personal creative expression.
Methodology
Instructor: Demonstrations, Lectures, Presentations and Critiques
Student: Execution of ceramic techniques, museum visit
Reading assigned materials, Research and Critiques
Techniques: Handbuilding, throwing, mold making, modeling, glazing, and firing
